CASE: Aarhus University Hospital.
ABOUT THE HOSPITAL
Aarhus University Hospital (AUH) is the biggest hospital construction project in Denmark in current history. Connecting the existing Aarhus University Hospital Skejby into one large new hospital complex. AUH is the size of a small Danish city, with streets, neighborhoods, and green areas. AUH is designed to be flexible meeting future demands regarding techniques, treatments, and work methods. The hospital finished construction in 2019.
THE CHALLENGE
A recent analysis by Aarhus University Hospital (AUH) shows that hospital staff use about 12 minutes per shift to locate essential resources. Considering the size and scale of the new generation of super hospitals, the risk of spending more time searching for beds, equipment, patients and staff was increased.
As a large-scale campus covering 375,000m², AUH is completely covered with state-of-the-art equipment and systems. It has over 800 beds and annual capacity for 100,000 inpatients and 900,000 outpatients so logistical challenges could occur and ways to mitigate them were investigated.
THE SOLUTION
AUH’s vision was to create an environment that allowed staff to easily locate assets, equipment, and resources through an accessible IT-based solution. Lyngsoe Systems have vast experience and provided a comprehensive RTLS (real-time location system) tracking platform with identification technology such as barcode RFID, Wi-Fi, and BLE. The RTLS software was integrated with the Columna Service Logistics from Systematic and delivered a hospital-wide RTLS solution.
All items including equipment, beds, and staff were identified with RFID tags and an array of fixed mounted antennas (Readers) deployed throughout the hospital infrastructure. The result was a solution that delivers accurate real-time location data that staff can easily access.
THE BENEFITS
FURTHER RESULTS
AUH expects the solution to optimize workflows by analyzing where delays occur and are expected to reduce costs by making it easier to locate required items, rather than losing and reordering items.
Implementation of such an advanced and comprehensive real-time tracking system safeguards logistics at AUH well into the future. Patient care is dependent on the ready availability of equipment and personnel – particularly in emergencies. Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ together with Systematic provide visibility for the hospital, adding value for staff and patients alike.
