Hospitals around the world have experienced the effects of the global coronavirus pandemic, it has put a spotlight on the importance of tracking to safely manage and minimise the spread of the virus. As Hospitals return to a new ‘normal’ they face the prospect of managing future outbreaks of the virus alongside the intense pressures that are currently being experienced from high occupancy rates.
The need for healthcare systems to start working smarter to embrace digital transformation and become more efficient while maintaining high levels of safety within their day-to-day operations is vital, now more than ever.
X-Tracking™ is a real-time tracking solution capable of tracking thousands of medical devices, assets and sterile goods in hospitals and communities. X-Tracking™ is highly scalable and can be deployed as a small-scale system up to an enterprise-wide tracking solution.
– Too much time is spent searching for equipment needed for patient care
– Walking long distances searching for a medical device
– Trying to identify medical devices that are due service and repair
– Equipment being hoarded and hidden in wards
– Shrinkage of available equipment fleet
X-Tracking™ is a web-based location tracking solution that supports multiple use cases within a healthcare setting. It combines software with leading edge data capture technologies to provide an enterprise ready solution that can scale from a small install or cover multiple sites. X-Tracking™ is a GS1 Approved product and supports the GS1 Standards.
X-Tracking™ solutions consist of four main components:
– X-Tracking™ user interface application
– Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ engine and integration layer
– RFID tags and labels
– Readers for tags and barcode scanners
X-Tracking™ is a real-time location tracking solution that allows users to quickly locate assets using the web-based search tool. X-Tracking™ works on any authorised connected device such as a PC or Smart phone. Users can interrogate the database to find assets and resources within the hospital and gain insights on specific logistic workflows to support continual improvement processes.
Users search for assets using a wildcard search tool by typing a combination of either a name, model, asset number and location. Adding further detail will refine the search and the results display any visual alert notifications.
Search results contain; last seen location, name, state, asset type and much more. All data can be exported to business intelligence solutions or X-Tracking™ can be integrated with 3rd Party systems to share location updates to enrich existing applications.
X-Tracking™ also contains a user-friendly search function where the user can drill down through both location and asset hierarchies in an interactive asset overview screen as shown below.
Assets are tagged with RFID labels or hardcase RFID tags depending on the type of asset. One RFID label is mounted on each asset in a position where it can be easily read. Each RFID label or tag is programmed with a GS1 Global Individual Asset Identifier (GIAI) code and printed with a 2D barcode along with human readable text. A company logo and contact information can also be added where required.
Some assets are also tagged with active tags that contain a battery and support real-time registration either in zones or as positioning. Active tags are automatically read by a compatible network such as WiFi Access Points, BLE Anchor nodes or Gateways located throughout the hospital.
RFID tags are read or interrogated by passive RFID readers that can be mounted on ceilings or walls. Handheld terminals and mobile carts provide additional data capture opportunities to support individual customer requirements.
Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) RFID fixed readers are installed at doorways or chokepoints to key logistic areas such as ward entrances and medical equipment storage rooms. Readers automatically detect and report each assets unique RFID tag ID as they move in and out of these chokepoint areas.
RFID handheld terminals are used by hospital staff to manually register assets at a location, e.g. when auditing a store room or a ward area that is not covered by fixed chokepoint readers.
Lyngsoe Systems also provides other forms of data capture devices, we use our vast experience to ensure the best solution is always implemented for each use case to support and streamline the customers individual processes.
1. Sterile equipment ready to leave SDU in transport carts.
2. Transportation moves sterile equipment to local and/or remote storage locations.
3. Sterile equipment is picked from storage location, enters theatre prep rooms ready for procedures.
4. Sterile equipment is used in a procedure.
5. Used ‘dirty’ equipment is transported back to SDU for reprocessing.
6. Sterile equipment ready for transportation from SDU.
Hospitals face business issues like any other large organisation. By introducing RFID technology and X-Tracking into your flow, you will be able to automate and seamlessly deliver value such as:
· Easy to find medical equipment ready for use
· Improved preparation of surgical operations
· Sterile Service reprocess according to incoming flow
· Clinical Staff have full overview of ‘available’ beds, wheelchair and similar
· Patient safety is improved
On top of this automated monitoring & tracking the data intelligence gathering can be used for reporting and analysis of a facility’s processes. This allows healthcare executives and senior management to react quickly to — as well as prevent — obstacles related to items such as:
· Compliance reporting
· Costs Control
· Readmission rates
· Patient throughput
· Equipment shrinkage
· Capital expenditures
· Staff safety & shortages
Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ manages and handles data consolidation, transformation, and processing of RTLS data captured from the various sources. It handles everything from location management, master data management, trace database and provides validated tracking information to asset management systems or ERP systems.
