Improved baggage performance providing cost savings

CASE: Milan Malpensa Airport

Milan Malpensa Airport implemented Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ to control cost and improve process efficiency while at the same time maintaining security and customer satisfaction. The overall goals were cost savings and higher baggage throughput, improved baggage process transparency, and eliminated manual encoding stations in the baggage handling system

Our RFID system is an airport system available for all carriers. It is capable of fully substituting the barcode. It is completely automated, which means it is possible to operate normally without manual encoding stations. We are very satisfied with the system, which have been in operation for nearly 10 years and we enjoy the continuous collaboration with Lyngsoe Systems

About Milan Malpensa Airport

Milan Malpensa Airport is the second largest airport in Italy. They handle close to 20 million passengers a year and serve more than 110 airlines.

With the implementation of Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ Milan Malpensa Airport was the first airport in Europe and only the third in the world to have a comprehensive RFID on baggage system deployed.

THE CHALLENGE

An ambitious development plan

Before the implementation, Milan Malpensa Airport experienced a heavy increase in the number of passengers. That meant consequential capacity growth and increased efficiency requirements. An ambitious development plan including the implementation of supporting technology was drafted to support the substantial growth.

THE SOLUTION

Passive RFID system working with existing control and scanner systems

To handle the increasing number of passengers it was necessary to advance the baggage performance. Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ was implemented to gain 100% read rates in the baggage handling system leading to elimination of manual sortation of check-in baggage. The solution covers RFID integration in all check-in baggage tags, RFID infrastructure for check-in and the baggage handling conveyors as well as a baggage reconciliation system. Lyngsoe Systems integrated this passive RFID system into the existing control and scanner systems. The system utilizes the information from both barcode and RFID, but can be operational solely on RFID.

THE BENEFITS

Complete automated system

  • Costs savings and increase throughput of baggage
  • Improved baggage process transparency
  • Complete automated system with no encoding required

RESULT

Reduction of costs, faster baggage processing time, and transparency

After implementing Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ Milan Malpensa Airport went from a read rate in the baggage handling system of 93% to 100%. This has led to a reduction of costs, faster baggage processing time, and advances in baggage process transparency.
