CASE: NHS Lothian

Manage and track sterile assets across multiple sites at SDU facility at NHS Lothian

The second largest Health Authority in the UK is NHS Lothian, and it has its own onsite sterilisation and decontamination unit servicing 4 acute sites within the Health Authority. Lyngsoe Systems is working alongside Cantel Medical to deliver a solution to help track various sterile goods as they move throughout a busy hospital logistics supply chain.

THE CHALLENGE

HEADLINE

  • Clinical staff often postpone or cancel surgical operations when instrument sets are not available
  • Sterile services struggle to conduct timely cleaning and sterilisation of instruments

THE SOLUTION

HEADLINE

  • Instrument trays are equipped with autoclavable RFID tags that are GS1 encoded and laser marked with barcode
  • Tray set data can be shared with 3rd party solutions such as CANEXIS™ or other suppliers
  • RFID readers scan trays moving through Sterile Services, Storage Areas and Operating Theatres
  • X-Tracking™ shows the whereabouts of each tray set in real-time

X-Tracking™ will provide full visibility of tray sets, endoscopes, and other sterile goods as they leave the sterilisation and decontamination departments and records them arriving at the remote storage facilities located across the Health Board. Lyngsoe Systems supply RFID GSI encoded tags to support NHS Lothian as they adopt and implement GS1 standards. X-Tracking™ is integrated with CANEXIS™ Integrated Workflow Solution from Cantel Medical. Accurate location data will be seamlessly updated between the two applications and a web-based search screen provides staff with easy access to search for specific sterile trays and endoscopes.

BENEFITS

HEADLINE

  • Improved preparation of surgical operations
  • Sterile Service reprocess according to incoming flow of instrument set, priority, and expiry dates.
  • Traceability information is created automatically
  • Patient safety is improved

This project will be the first of its kind in Scotland to deliver a fully integrated system with GS1 Standards and provides NHS Lothian with a tool to maximise operational efficiency, while maintaining high standards of patient safety. The system will help the Health Board manage its inventory of surgical instruments to ensure full traceability and safety throughout the sterilisation and decontamination processes.
